Stream Quality: Wireless Requirements and Troubleshooting

Freezing, Choppiness, Jumping and Other Quality Problems with your Live Stream


The information in this article applies to quality issues that you may experience while streaming your POV video with the Live Mod. These issues might take the form of a stream that appears pixilated, or a stream that seems to jump from scene to scene without displaying the frames in between.


The most common cause of these is poor or insufficient wireless bandwidth. Your Pivothead SMART glasses capture high-quality video, and this video can take up a lot of space. When recording to the SD card in your device, this isn't a problem, as the memory card is always fast enough to handle the video. Wireless streaming is different because the strength and type of your wireless connection can vary drastically. When more data is being sent then what your wireless connection can process, some of that data is lost, resulting in a choppy or blocky video.


Most Internet connections are setup to be faster at downloading something than at uploading it. This means that the cause of most streaming problems is usually, but not always, with the connection of the uploading device.


There are two sources of upload congestion in regards to streaming video from your SMART glasses. The first is the connection between your WiFi access point (or router) and your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Most ISP's give their customers a much higher download speed than they do upload, and this is the first area to look at.


How to determine your ISP upload speed:

  1. Visit using a desk or laptop.
  2. Select "Begin Test"
  3. Record the ping and upload speeds
  4. Repeat the test again to ensure that you are getting accurate results


  • Use a wired Internet connection using one of your modem's ethernet ports. During this test we want to rule out wireless interference as the cause, so your test computer needs to connect directly to your modem or router.
  • Don't use a smartphone. Although speed test services are available for these devices, since they can't connect directly to your modem, the results will be lower.
  • If the speeds from the two tests above differ by more than a few points, rerun the test until the numbers are close to each other or try the test at a different time.
  • Network speed is measured in bits (b), but file size is measured in bytes (B), and there are 8 bits in each byte. So although you might think that it should only take two seconds to upload a 50 MB file using a 25 Mbps connection, it actually takes 8 times as long, or 16 seconds.


Stream Setting:

Once you have confirmed your upload speed, write it down, and then use the table below to see what your streaming quality should be.

Wondering why your streaming setting is lower than your upload speed?

Remember how we said that there are two factors that go into your streaming quality. The first is the upload bandwidth provided to you by your ISP, which is what we just checked. The second is the wireless signal between your Pivothead Live Mod and your wireless access point. The strength and capacity of this signal depend on where your Live Mod is located in relation to your access point and how you are using it. If you are standing directly next to your access point, your wireless signal will be strong, and your wireless upload speed will be near what you recorded earlier. However, we know that most people are not going to use their Live Mods in this way and so we require that your upload speed be about three times higher than your stream setting in order for the video stream to be clear and consistent.  Distance from your access point is very important to signal strength and your access point's manual will have a list of the maximum distances supported. The type of material between you and your access point is also important. Blow you will find some of the common materials that will lower your wireless signal strength.

Increasing your bandwidth

Here are a few things you can do to improve your streaming quality:
  1. Disconnect other devices from your network. Bandwidth is like the water pressure in your home. Each open faucet reduces the amount of water available to the rest of the house. Here are some of the largest consumers of your limited bandwidth
    • Home phones. Most home phones today use your Internet connection to place and receive calls and transmission of voice can use up a lot of bandwidth.
    • Gaming consoles.
    • Tablets and smartphones. Even if these devices are only downloading an app or a movie, they will still use up a portion of your upload bandwidth.

  2. Move your access point to a more central location. It is usually better to have fewer materials between you and your access point even if that means moving your access point farther away.

  3. Add a new access point to your home or office.
